Chapter Six
“Sarah, bring those beers my way,” Rocket called from his position at the horseshoe pit.
With several longnecks looped in her fingers, she made her way through the crush of kids doing a three-legged race. Several ladies lounged on blankets on the grass waiting for their men to stop playing silly games and settle for the fireworks show.
As she passed Harris, he eyed her. She offered him a beer but he waved her on. When she looked up, she caught Connall staring at her with a grim expression. She saw a lot of that look. He also wore it when he was fucking her. Even in ecstasy he was in torment.
All my fault. She’d burdened him with her sin, and though his shoulders were broad enough to carry it, he bled.
She gave him a slight smile. To her surprise, the corner of his mouth quirked up. Her heart turned over and took off at a faster pace. Doctor Connall West was a devastating man. She’d fallen for his brains first, in awe of his store of knowledge. Then his skill had opened some chasm inside her. Finally, his tenderness and the care he showed her melted her into a puddle.
Somehow she managed to reach the horseshoe pits without falling flat on her face. Rocket took a beer and leaned in to plant a sloppy, half-drunk kiss on her cheek. Unable to help herself, she glanced at Connall.
His smile was gone and that deep crease etched between his brows. He folded his arms over his big chest and pressed his fist to his mouth as he looked on.
Her body was more alive than it should be at seeing his thoughtful pose. After he’d spanked her and spent himself, they’d crawled into the back seat, where he’d let her hold him. Cradling his head against her bare breasts, she’d soothed him with soft words.
He didn’t say so, but not being able to help that man in the store had cut him deep. Sliced him, shattered bones that were the very foundation of what he believed in. He’d taken an oath to help, but he’d been looked down upon for what he was besides a doctor.
He’d confided that he moved around a lot because of the clash of his career and his personal interests in the club. It worried her that he could take off again, but she had no rights to him. If he left, she couldn’t stop him.
His gaze was trained on her as she circled the group, passing out beers. When her hands were empty, she wiped the condensation on her jeans and turned in a circle to see where she was most needed.
The Fourth of July celebration was just as it always had been. Good food and fun for all the club members and their families. One of the old ladies, Delta, was singing, and Ever and Jamison were slow-dancing. Their lone figures struck a chord deep inside Sarah, and suddenly she ached to be held.
Twisting around again, she searched for Connall, but he was nowhere to be seen.
